Definitions of Generations

Excerpts from ‘iBosses: The Rise of Gen y Entrepreneurs – The Momentum Behind the New Age of Entrepreneurs’

Generational cohorts may cover a period of 20 to 22 years, where each generation may be identified by birth year and the members have different profiles and characteristics, possibly influenced by significant life experiences (Severt et al., 2009).

Pendergast (2011) stated that there is no definitive birth range that characterizes each generation type. However, many scholars regard Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y in the following birth ranges:
· Baby Boomers were born from 1943 to 1960,
· Generation X was born from 1961 to 1981, and
· Generation Y was born from 1982 to 2002.

Kowske, Rasch, and Wiley (2010) expressed their concern over changes in the values and behaviors of recent generations. Jefferies and Hunte (2003) argued that Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y have dissimilar value systems and respond differently to situations. In addition, Pendergast (2011) provided a list of differences of the three generations in terms of the following factors: (a) beliefs and values, (b) motivations, (c) decision making, (d) earning and spending, (e) learning styles, (f) marketing and communication, (g) training environment, and (h) management and leadership.
